It can be difficult to establish a long-lasting fitness routine in the New Year. If you feel like your initial spur of motivation at the start of January subsides by the middle to end of the month, you are not alone! However, it is possible to create sustainable routines if the right approach is taken. Here are some top tips and tactics that you can try to get the best start to 2023:
Start small
A key strategy for developing a sustainable fitness routine, especially if you are new to the gym, is to start small and gradually increase intensity and duration. This could look like starting with a 10 or 15 minute run, then gradually increasing it to 20 minutes, then 30 minutes, etc. Easing into your routine will aid in preventing injury and burnout, making you want to continue your commitment!
Set realistic goals
Create a fitness routine that is sustainable by setting goals that are actually attainable. It is essential to have something to strive for, but setting unattainable goals can set you up for disappointment. You wouldn’t expect to be able to bench 100kg straight away if you've never done it before, right?! Dividing your overarching goal into manageable steps you can take should help you along the way. If you aren’t sure on your fitness level or where you should start, our PTs and staff are more than happy to help!
Find activities that you enjoy
Finding activities that you enjoy massively helps when maintaining a healthy fitness routine. Put simply, you won't stick to the routine as easily if you don't enjoy the activity! Yoga, Pilates, weightlifting, running and cycling are just a few forms of exercise that are available to you; therefore, take the time to investigate various options and discover something that you actually like doing. You'll be more likely to stick with your exercise regimen if you enjoy it and it helps towards your new routine and goals!
Schedule your workouts
By scheduling your workouts ahead of time, you can better ensure that you stick to your routine. You will be less likely to postpone or find excuses to stay on the couch if you schedule specific times each day of the week for a gym session. It's also helpful to plan your workout beforehand so you know what you’re ready to do when you arrive at the club.
Hold yourself accountable
Developing a long-lasting fitness routine requires consistency and accountability. Working out with a friend or trainer, tracking your progress, and setting reminders for yourself are all examples of ways you can accomplish this. By remaining committed to your objectives, you’ll usually feel a sense of accomplishment, which will motivate you to maintain your new habits!
Hopefully these few simple strategies will help you stay on track and reach your fitness goals this year. By following these tips and being consistent, you should be able to establish a routine that will last well beyond January (and even 2023!). Progress rarely follows a straight line, and ups and downs are to be expected, but don’t let that stop you! As long as you keep going, that’s what matters. See you in the gym!
